Band of Brothers

The next blog is about the hit TV series Band of Brothers based on the book by Stephen E. Ambose.  This series was aired in 2001 by HBO, the BBC, Playtone & Dream Works and was produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, with an estimated budget of $125,000,000.

The film locations varied from Switzerland to England, with the majority being filmed in Hatfield Aerodrome in Hertfordshire where they recreated replicas of European towns.  The picture below shows a take-off sequence before the D-Day landings, which was filmed at North Weald Airfield.

The casting for the actors was done brilliantly; this has led to many of them becoming famous, these include:

·         Damien Lewis

·         Ron Livingston

·         Donnie Wahlberg

·         Scott Grimes

·         Dexter Fletcher

·         Michael Fassbender

·         Matthew Settle

·         David Schwimmer

·         Colin Hanks

·         Tom Hardy

·         Dominic Cooper

·         Simon Pegg

·         James McAvoy

·         Tom Hanks

·         Jimmy Fallon

The storyline centres on Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division during World War 2, from 1942 to 1945. To get behind enemy lines to help support the landing at Utah beach they parachute in, they also participate in the liberation of Carentan as well as a concentration camp. They once again parachute into an operation called Market Garden and were the first to enter Hitler’s mountain retreat in Berchtesgarten.

I have to be honest……this is my favourite TV series, it is just fantastic! It is full of action, huge war scenes, big explosions and so much emotion / feelings between characters.  It permanently has you hooked and before you know it, the episode has finished. It is also factual as at the end of each episode it tells you information regarding that event you just watched i.e. if any of the men won awards or who died etc. You even have interviews with the real characters at the beginning on the episodes, but you never know who they are until the end so that it keeps you guessing. So in my opinion get online and buy this series, you won’t regret it!
